Adm. Christopher W. Grady, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFFC) delivered the keynote address and answered questions Sept. 17, 2020, at the 2020 American Society of Naval Engineers’ (ASNE) Virtual Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium.
Grady spoke about fleet readiness, including the vital importance of the industrial base, the Navy’s Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP), and modernizing Sailor training and technical expertise.
“We can’t continue with business as usual. From Sailor to shipyard – we must stop talking and start doing things differently to get after our readiness imperative – and I believe that we are,” said Grady. “We have to dispense with the mentality where we build readiness just-in-time for the next deployment. We have to have that idea that every day is the last day of peace, and instead adopt the mindset where we constantly prepare ourselves for the unknown.”
