Lt. Justin Strauss is a native of Marietta, Georgia.  He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Miami (Fla.), and is a graduate of the Unit Leader Course and Senior Musician Course at the Naval School of Music.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2003 and attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois.  Following training, he reported to the School of Music in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as a trumpet instrumentalist.

Strauss began his enlisted career assigned to Navy Band Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee.  Other enlisted duty stations include U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band, Navy Band Northwest, Naval School of Music, and Fleet Band Activities. 



Strauss served 14 years in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of first class petty officer.  He commissioned as a limited duty officer bandmaster on Dec. 1, 2017, and served his first officer tour as the training officer at the Naval School of Music.

His personal military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), Good Conduct Medal (four awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
