MOUNT VERNON, Va. - Capt. Brent C. Gaut, commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), reads from George Washington’s personal letters, which were transcribed and displayed in the Washington Library at Mount Vernon, Virginia, Sept. 14, 2022. Recipients of the George Washington Spirit of Freedom and Sailor of the Quarter awards were invited to Mount Vernon for a tour of the residency. George Washington is undergoing refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
